An 11-year-old girl had boiling water poured on her by friends while she was resting during a sleepover at a home on Findlay Ave. near E. 166th St. in East Concourse, Bronx, New York early on Monday morning.
Jamoneisha Merritt was sleeping but was jolted awake when friends poured the hot water on her. The friends were playing a game called the "hot water challenge" in which an unsuspecting victim has hot water thrown on them or a different variation where someone is made to drink boiling water. Merritt's friends had warned her not to sleep else they would do something to her.
The girl suffered second-degree burns to her face, neck, shoulders and chest and is still receiving treatment in hospital. Her mother, Ebony, says her daughter is in a lot of pain both physically and emotionally and that they are not letting her look at her injuries yet.
Ebony Merritt said: "She's very sad. She's emotionally messed up. She don't understand why they did that to her. She thought they was her friends. I was told that they didn't like her. And they just been bullying her. They've been on Snapchat. It's been going on several times. The girl admitted it. 'I don't like her. I wanted to do it.'"
There was an adult in the home at the time. A 12-year-old girl is being charged with felony assault.
